Die raumgreifende Arbeit «Longing to Belong» thematisiert die Sehnsucht nach Zugehörigkeit und den gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit Identitätsfragen, auch und gerade in einer konflikthaften, globalisierten Welt. Besucher:innen werden am Empfang auf­gefordert, ein Los zu ziehen, und gewinnen damit die Bürger­schaft eines fiktiven Landes. Wer Pech hat und eine Niete erwischt, bleibt staatenlos. Das Zentrum der Installation bilden Flaggen, die für imaginäre Nationen (Imaginationen) stehen. Von Zeit zu Zeit wehen die Fahnen im Wind und eine der Hymnen erklingt. Eine Reihe von Telefonhörern lädt ein, die Länder anhand «sachlicher» Informationen und Zahlen zu entdecken. Die erfundenen Länder verweisen auf den Zufall, in einem bestimmten Land geboren zu sein – ein gutes oder schlechtes Los gezogen zu haben. Sie fordern auf, über den fortlaufenden Prozess der Verbindungen und Trennungen von Gemeinschaften nachzudenken.

The expansive room installation "Longing to Belong" addresses the longing for belonging and how society deals with questions of identity, especially in a conflict-ridden, globalized world. Flags representing imaginary nations (imaginations) form the centre of the installation. Visitors are invited to draw a raffle ticket at the reception and win citizenship of a fictitious country. Those who are less fortunate and draw a „bad“ ticket remain stateless. From time to time, the flags wave in the wind, and one of the anthems is played through the speakers. A row of telephone receivers invites visitors to discover the countries by means of ‘factual’ information and statistics. The invented countries refer to the coincidence of being born in a particular country. They invite us to reflect on the ongoing process of connecting and separating communities.
