Longing to Belong

Die raumgreifende Arbeit «Longing to Belong» thematisiert die Sehnsucht nach Zugehörigkeit und den gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit Identitätsfragen, auch und gerade in einer konflikthaften, globalisierten Welt. Das Zentrum der Installation bilden dreizehn neu gestaltete Flaggen, die für imaginäre Länder stehen (Imaginationen). Textile Inseln laden ein, Platz zu nehmen, um die farbenprächtigen Fahnen zu betrachten und die ebenfalls fiktiven Landesbeschreibungen und Hymnen zu hören. Die erfundenen Länder verweisen auf den Zufall, in einem bestimmten Land geboren zu sein. Sie fordern auf, über den fortlaufenden Prozess der Verbindungen und Trennungen von Gemeinschaften nachzudenken.

The expansive room installation "Longing to Belong" addresses the longing for belonging and how society deals with questions of identity, especially in a conflict-ridden, globalized world. Thirteen newly designed flags, which stand for imaginary nations (imaginations), form the center of the installation. Textile islands invite to take a seat to look at the colorful flags and listen to the equally fictitious country descriptions and hymns. The invented countries refer to the coincidence of being born in a particular country. They invite us to reflect on the ongoing process of connecting and separating communities.
