Die textile Inselgruppe mit dem Titel «No One Is an Island legt den Fokus auf das, was Menschen eint. In Anlehnung an den Schriftsteller, Dichter und Philosophen Édouard Glissant betrachtet Odermatt die Insel nicht als Symbol der Abschottung, sondern der Verbindung. Glissant wurde 1928 auf der Insel Martinique geboren, kämpfte für die politische Unabhängigkeit der Karibik und setzte sich intensiv mit den Auswirkungen des Kolonialismus und mit Fragen der kulturellen Identität auseinander. Das von ihm vorgeschlagene «archipelische Denken» ist eine Metapher, die Glissant verwendet hat, um eine Vorstellung von kultureller Vielfalt, Vernetzung und Hybridität zu vermitteln. Er betonte, dass Kulturen nicht isoliert existieren, sondern in ständiger Interaktion und Verbindung miteinander stehen, ähnlich den Inseln eines Archipels. Der Titel zitiert eine berühmte Textzeile des englischen Dichters und Shakespeare-Zeitgenossen John Donne. Er beschreibt mit dem Satz «No one is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main», dass jeder einzelne Mensch ein Teil des grossen Ganzen ist.

The textile archipelago titled „No One Is an Island" focuses on what unites people. In accordance with the writer, poet and philosopher Édouard Glissant, Odermatt sees the islands not as a symbol of self-isolation, but rather of connection. Glissant was born in 1928 on the island of Martinique, fought for the political independence of the Caribbean and dealt intensively with the effects of colonialism and questions of cultural identity. For this, he suggests “archipelagic thinking”, which he uses as a metaphor to convey an idea of cultural diversity, interconnectedness and hybridity, while stressing that cultures do not exist in isolation, but are rather in constant interaction and connection with each other – similar to islands in an archipelago. The title quotes a famous line from the English poet and Shakespeare contemporary John Donne. With the sentence ‘No one is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main’, he describes how every single person is a part of a greater picture.
