Der Titel der Inselgruppe, «No One Is an Island», zitiert eine berühmte Textzeile des englischen Dichters John Donne (1572 – 1631). Er beschreibt mit dem Satz «No one is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main», dass jeder einzelne Mensch ein Teil des grossen Ganzen ist. Gleichzeitig bezieht sich die Arbeit auf den auf der Insel Martinique geborenen Schriftsteller, Dichter und Philosophen Édouard Glissant (1928–2011). Er betonte, dass Kulturen nicht isoliert existieren, sondern in ständiger Interaktion und Verbindung miteinander stehen, ähnlich den Inseln eines Archipels. Dafür verwendete er den Begriff des «archipelischen Denkens», eine Metapher, dass sich der Mensch gleichzeitig dem Hier und Dort, dem Nah und Fern verbunden fühlen kann.

The textile archipelago titled «No One Is an Island» focuses on what unites people.  The title quotes a famous line by the English poet John Donne (1572 – 1631). In the sentence «No one is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main», he describes how every individual is a part of the greater whole. At the same time, the work refers to the writer, poet and philosopher Édouard Glissant (1928 – 2011), who was born on the island of Martinique. Glissant emphasized that cultures do not exist in isolation, but are in constant interaction and connection with one another, much like the islands of an archipelago. He used the term ‘archipelagic thinking’, a metaphor illustrating how people can simultaneously feel connected to both the near and the far, the here and the there.
